Possible method to help retain sanity: Think of our president as a natural disaster. We don’t get angry at hurricanes. We just do our best to minimize the damage. We build levees. We design more durable houses. Maybe we should do the same with Trump.
I find this a useful perspective because it helps me focus on solutions instead of wallowing in rage.
Plus, I think maybe there’s some truth to it. I believe most people have limited free will (if any), and our actions are often the result of genetics and environment. But maybe some, like Trump, are even more constrained, as they lack emotional regulation and are driven by a deep need for approval, revenge, whims, etc. Of course, that’s probably letting him off too easily. He could commit to working on his emotional regulation just as the rest of us do.
Regardless, I’ve been trying this reframing as a natural disaster for a couple of days now. As with everything, the approach has its pros and cons. But at least in my case, it helps motivate me to find solutions. So I pass it along!
Thanks, AJ. This reframe appears to be a significant improvement over the Selective Ignorance I’ve been practicing. 🤞🏼
We in Brazil have had our quota of "natural disasters". The problem is that more than 50% of the population (at least the voters) have chosen it and take "natural disasters" for blessings . In a polarized society disasters or blessings may have disturbingly different meanings.
